Beta Read
I’ll read your story, leave comments about all my first impressions as I read, and create an Editorial Assessment, in which I’ll summarize my thoughts on the plot, characters, setting, genre-fit, and style.
Developmental Edits
Like with the beta read, I’ll read your story and give feedback on the big picture items (characters and their arcs, plot arc, setting, etc.), but with dev edits I’ll do a closer reading and give more thorough feedback (in comments and Editorial Assessment).
Substantive Edits
Substantive edits are for the line and paragraph level issues. I’ll edit for flow within scenes and chapters, consistency of voice, and overall readability.
Copyedits
Copyediting is where I get into the nitty-gritties of grammar and consistency (if the MC’s eyes are blue on page 1 but brown on page 300, I’ll let you know).
Proofread
Once a story has been copyedited, it should be proofread. This is the final step before publication, and is a final read-through to check for errors that have been missed in other rounds of edits.
